It is with great sadness that I write this post as the world has lost a scientific giant. And, Catherine has lost her best friend, companion and champion. Catherine, I hope you can find some peace and rest as the days move on. You have been an amazing caregiver, facing incredible obstacles helping Frans fight cancer and strive to live as long as possible. My heart goes out to you as you grieve and make steps to prepare for your future without Frans.
I was first introduced to Frans and Catherine at a dinner hosted by my cousin and her husband, only knowing they were dear neighbors and friends. The dinner conversation naturally centered around the publishing of Frans’s latest book. Not knowing his history or just HOW many books he had written, I innocently asked, “Is this your first book?” Frans was gracious in his response to my naive question and almost seemed to revel in the fact that I knew nothing of his fame. He was that unassuming and down to earth. However, his brilliance was front and center that night and on subsequent occasions when we gathered to share wonderful evenings centered around food, good wine, games and lots of laughter. He was not only a brilliant scientist but a fun loving friend and acquaintance. Oh, how I wish you’d had more time on this earth to be with us Frans! I would have loved to have known you better.
I send hugs and healing wishes to you dear Catherine.
