I knew Frans for 19 years. In 2005, I became a research assistant working directly with the chimpanzees he studied. I remained in that position for five years, but maintained my friendship with Frans and his wife Catherine afterwards. Frans would occasionally ask me to contribute to his ongoing research with drawings or, most recently, reading a couple of chapters for his most recent book “Different” prior to its publication and giving some feedback. This was a great honor for me. I absolutely adored Frans and it is difficult for me to think or speak of him in the past tense. My heart goes out to Catherine who misses him terribly. I will never forget his inclusiveness, brilliant mind, sense of humor, and his encouragement for me to be as creative and productive as possible within the parameters of our behavioral research with chimpanzees. Frans will be greatly missed. - Devyn Carter
