With my daughter - who studies Biology - we visited Apenheul in The Netherlands to meet a young baby bonobo named after Frans. Here she is...
"A young bonobo was born at the end of February. Both mother and baby are doing well. The baby is the first offspring for mother Pangi, who is doing incredibly well. She is very caring for the baby and protects it well. The little one is a female and she is named after primatologist Frans de Waal. She has been given the name Mayele Frans. Mayele is from Lingala, a language spoken in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo where bonobos live in the wild, and stands for intelligent, wise, expert; "a nice additional reference to Frans de Waal".
