I was an undergraduate at the Primate Center in Wisconsin when I met Frans. We worked on reconcilation behaviour in primates, and I was thrilled that I was coauthor on the publication. It helped me get into graduate school, but more than that, helped me feel a sense of self worth and pride. He was an excellent teacher and mentor, and invited my then fiancee and now husband into their homes both in Madison and in Georgia. Great memories of their collection of cats, fish, and slide shows of recent travels. Just a smart, caring guy, with a fantastic wife supporting him. He spoke of her often. A loss to the primatology community. Thanks Frans, for everything you did for me, farewell.
