As a student at Emory I took one of his classes and worked at the Yerkes research center but not directly in Fran’s department. A group of us would play soccer (or football) and drink beer after work. Frans was super competitive and didn’t like to lose. I distinctly remember stealing the ball from him and being tripped as I dribbled away with the ball. We laughed about that several times. He was authentic to the core and such a great observer and teacher.
